Busy Sunday For Öncü In Catalunya

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Öncü finished up in ninth place after what was eventually a six-lap WorldSSP Race Two at the Circuit de Barcelona - Catalunya, on Sunday 24 March.

A disturbed end to the weekend for all the WorldSSP competitors came about after the supposed second 18-lap WorldSSP contest was halted due to a crash that left a rider and bike in a dangerous position in the run-off area of T1.

After the red flag stoppage, then a track clear up session and a quick restart procedure, the race was finally restarted as a completely new event, over only six laps, but with full championship points still awarded.

Starting from seventh place on the grid Can moved up to sixth place but then lost positions on the final two laps of what was a particularly frantic and intense race.

Ninth place for Öncü delivered another useful haul of points.

After experiencing ‘arm pump’ with his right forearm - not the left arm that was injured in a big crash last season - Can will now have a surgical procedure to ease the problem in time for the next round at Assen in the Netherlands.

In the championship, after two rounds and four races, Can left Catalunya in overall 13th position, having earlier finished eighth in Race One on Saturday.

Can Öncü, stated: “We had a good race in the end and it was positive with the bike. I enjoyed it. We will try to improve more in the next race and we will work hard to improve again. In the end we did a good job but next week I am going to have arm-pump surgery to improve myself. Hopefully in Assen we will be much stronger.”

Gabriele Giannini (Prodina Kawasaki) was the next best Kawasaki rider in the short Race Two, in 21st place. Hikari Okubo (Vince 64 Kawasaki) was 23rd and Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing Kawasaki) 27th.

The classic northern European circuit of Assen, in the Netherlands, will host the third round of WorldSSP between 19-21 April.
